Madeira

From Lisbon, Ponta Delgada is 1,449 km on the great circle, about 2 h 15 min nonstop; Funchal is 965 km, about 1 h 45 min. Madeira is the shorter flight from Lisbon by half an hour, and Funchal has far more of them, including from Porto and most of Europe.

Madeira

Ponta Delgada's normals give 5 months in the comfortable band (Apr to Aug); Funchal's give 8 (Mar to Oct). Madeira's normals run comfortable from March to October; Ponta Delgada is cooler and wetter, with a five-month window. This is the round that most surprises people.

Rule: More months with a mean of 14 to 27 C and under 80 mm of rain wins.

On the World Bank's consumption price level, with Portugal at 100, The Azores sits at 100 (about the same as Portugal) and Madeira at 100 (about the same as Portugal). Same price level, because it is one country. Madeira's tourist hotels price higher; the Azores' rental cars price higher. Call it even.

The Azores

The Azores win on landscape drama and on emptiness; Madeira wins on walking infrastructure and on being able to do it in February. Madeira on points, the Azores on the day it is clear

Madeira wins the flight and the weather, which for a short trip is most of it. The Azores win the sights round and lose the weather round, and those two facts are the whole decision: go to the Azores with a week and a flexible plan, go to Madeira with a long weekend and a fixed one. Which has better weather, the Azores or Madeira?

Madeira, on the climate normals: Funchal has eight comfortable months (March to October) against Ponta Delgada's five (April to August), and much less rain.

Which is better for hiking?

Madeira has the denser, better-marked network (the levadas and the Pico Ruivo ridge). The Azores have the bigger single walks, Pico's summit above all, and more weather risk on the day.

How this card was scored

The tape holds six facts per side, each read from an official page on 15 September 2026: the Portuguese foreign ministry's travel advice for entry rules, the WMO's climate normals as supplied by each national weather service, the World Bank's consumption price level, the ISO currency list, the OurAirports coordinates for the flight estimate, and the national tourism board for the named sights. Rounds one to four are decided by the rules printed under each round. Round five is the one call we make ourselves, and the paragraph says why it went to The Azores.

Flight times are an estimate of a nonstop from Lisbon at 800 km/h plus half an hour; many of these routes connect, and the connection is where the real difference lies. Price levels are national averages; a capital's hotel district can sit well above them. Visa rules move: the source page and its read date sit in every cell so you can check the rule before you fly.
