Round 1: Getting in

Tunisia

Algeria: a consular visa arranged in advance. A visa must be obtained before travel from the Algerian consular section in Lisbon; visas are not issued at the border, and arrivals without one are sent back. Tunisia: visa-free on a passport. A valid passport; no visa needed for stays up to 90 days. The visa decides it. Tunisia is passport-only for 90 days; Algeria requires a visa arranged through the consulate in Lisbon and turns back anyone who arrives without one.

Rule: Fewer hoops wins: ID card, then visa-free, then on-arrival permit, then e-visa, then consular visa.

Algeria

From Lisbon, Algiers is 1,110 km on the great circle, about 2 h nonstop; Tunis is 1,711 km, about 2 h 45 min. Algiers is the closer airport to Lisbon; both usually mean a connection, and Tunis has more of them.

Round 3: When to go

Tunisia

Algiers's normals give 7 months in the comfortable band (Apr to Oct); Tunis's give 8 (Apr to Nov). Both sit on the same Mediterranean coast with similar normals. Tunis's autumn runs a month longer in the data.

Rule: More months with a mean of 14 to 27 C and under 80 mm of rain wins.

On the World Bank's consumption price level, with Portugal at 100, Algeria sits at 49 (well below Portugal) and Tunisia at 49 (well below Portugal). The World Bank puts them level on price. Algeria feels cheaper on the ground because there is so little aimed at tourists; Tunisia's coast is priced for visitors but still low.

Algeria

Algeria's board leads with Timgad, the Roman city and Djemila; Tunisia's with Carthage and Djerba. Timgad and Djemila are among the best-preserved Roman cities in Africa; Carthage is the more famous name and the less impressive site. Add Algeria's Sahara at Tassili and the Kasbah of Algiers and the round goes to Algeria.

Tunisia takes the rounds that get you there: no visa and a longer season. Algeria takes the shorter flight and the sights, and by a distance, because Timgad and Djemila with nobody else there is something Tunisia cannot offer; price is level. Ties go to the sights round, so the card says Algeria. If you are willing to do the consulate, the harder country is the better one. If you are not, Tunisia will give you a Roman Africa with a beach at the end of the day.

How do Portuguese citizens get an Algerian visa?

Through the consular section of the Algerian embassy in Lisbon, before travel; the foreign ministry's page says several visa types exist and that none is issued at the border.

Is there a land border between Algeria and Tunisia?

Yes, and it is open, but the foreign ministry advises against the mountainous border zones on the Tunisian side (Kasserine, El Kef, Jendouba). Most visitors fly.

Which country is cheaper for a traveller?

They sit level on the World Bank price index used here (both 49, Portugal = 100). Algeria is cheaper in practice because foreign-tourist pricing barely exists.

How this card was scored

The tape holds six facts per side, each read from an official page on 15 September 2026: the Portuguese foreign ministry's travel advice for entry rules, the WMO's climate normals as supplied by each national weather service, the World Bank's consumption price level, the ISO currency list, the OurAirports coordinates for the flight estimate, and the national tourism board for the named sights. Rounds one to four are decided by the rules printed under each round. Round five is the one call we make ourselves, and the paragraph says why it went to Algeria.

Flight times are an estimate of a nonstop from Lisbon at 800 km/h plus half an hour; many of these routes connect, and the connection is where the real difference lies. Price levels are national averages; a capital's hotel district can sit well above them. Visa rules move: the source page and its read date sit in every cell so you can check the rule before you fly.
