Georgia: visa-free on a passport. Portuguese citizens enter visa-free for up to a year; a travel insurance policy covering the whole stay is required at entry. Armenia: visa-free on a passport. Portuguese citizens enter visa-free and may stay 180 days within a one-year period. Both hand EU passports the easiest deal in the region. Georgia's one-year stay is the more generous on paper; Armenia's 180 days is more than any holiday needs. The insurance requirement at Georgia's border is the only extra step.

From Lisbon, Tbilisi is 4,527 km on the great circle, about 6 h 15 min nonstop; Yerevan is 4,527 km, about 6 h 15 min. Tbilisi and Yerevan are the same distance from Lisbon, and neither has a nonstop; you will connect through Istanbul, Warsaw or a Gulf hub either way.

Round 3: When to go

Armenia

Tbilisi's normals give 5 months in the comfortable band (May to Sep); Yerevan's give 6 (May to Oct). July means are within a degree of each other; the difference is October, which Yerevan's station keeps inside the band and Tbilisi's does not. Both are cold from November to March.

Rule: More months with a mean of 14 to 27 C and under 80 mm of rain wins.

Round 4: What it costs

Georgia

On the World Bank's consumption price level, with Portugal at 100, Georgia sits at 61 (below Portugal) and Armenia at 63 (below Portugal). Near-identical price levels. Wine is cheaper in Georgia, coffee and taxis cheaper in Armenia, and neither will trouble a Portuguese budget.

Georgia

Georgia's board leads with Gergeti Trinity Church, Kazbegi and Mtskheta; Armenia's with Tatev Monastery and Garni Temple. Georgia's card is Kazbegi's church against the mountain wall, Mtskheta's cathedrals and the wine towns of Kakheti; Armenia's is Tatev on its gorge and the pagan temple at Garni. Georgia takes it on range: mountains, wine country, a Black Sea coast and a capital with a real old town, where Armenia is mostly monasteries and Yerevan.

Georgia has more kinds of trip in it: a week can hold the Kazbegi road, a Kakheti wine weekend and Tbilisi's baths. Armenia is the better country for churches, gorges and a slower pace, and the open border means the honest answer for a fortnight is both, Tbilisi in, Yerevan out.

Is the Georgia to Armenia border open?

Yes. The Sadakhlo-Bagratashen crossing is the usual road route, served by marshrutkas and a daily train; allow half a day. Both countries admit Portuguese citizens without a visa, per the foreign ministry pages linked below.

Do I need insurance to enter Georgia?

The Portuguese foreign ministry's Georgia page lists a travel insurance policy covering the whole stay as an entry requirement, with exemptions only for diplomatic and official passports.

Which has the better wine?

Georgia claims 8,000 years of it and has a wine region, Kakheti, built for visiting. Armenia's wine scene is younger and centred on Areni. For a wine trip, Georgia.

How this card was scored

The tape holds six facts per side, each read from an official page on 15 September 2026: the Portuguese foreign ministry's travel advice for entry rules, the WMO's climate normals as supplied by each national weather service, the World Bank's consumption price level, the ISO currency list, the OurAirports coordinates for the flight estimate, and the national tourism board for the named sights. Rounds one to four are decided by the rules printed under each round. Round five is the one call we make ourselves, and the paragraph says why it went to Georgia.

Flight times are an estimate of a nonstop from Lisbon at 800 km/h plus half an hour; many of these routes connect, and the connection is where the real difference lies.
