The rounds

Round 1: Getting in

Armenia

Azerbaijan: an e-visa applied for before travel. An electronic visa from the ASAN portal (evisa.gov.az), applied for at least three working days ahead; single entry, up to 30 days; passport valid six months beyond the visa; stays over 15 days must be registered. Armenia: visa-free on a passport. Portuguese citizens enter visa-free and may stay 180 days within a one-year period. Armenia stamps you in for months; Azerbaijan wants an e-visa three working days ahead and a hotel registration if you stay past two weeks.

Rule: Fewer hoops wins: ID card, then visa-free, then on-arrival permit, then e-visa, then consular visa.

Paperwork, fewer is better
Azerbaijan: 3 Armenia: 1

Round 2: Getting there

Armenia

From Lisbon, Baku is 4,975 km on the great circle, about 6 h 45 min nonstop; Yerevan is 4,527 km, about 6 h 15 min. Neither has a nonstop from Lisbon; both route through Istanbul or a Gulf hub, so the half-hour difference on paper disappears in the connection.

Rule: Shorter estimated flight from Lisbon wins.

Hours in the air (estimate)
Azerbaijan: 6.75 h Armenia: 6.25 h

Round 3: When to go

Draw

Baku's normals give 6 months in the comfortable band (May to Oct); Yerevan's give 6 (May to Oct). The same six months, May to October, on both stations. Yerevan's altitude makes its summer nights cooler than the mean suggests; Baku's wind off the Caspian does the same job.

Rule: More months with a mean of 14 to 27 C and under 80 mm of rain wins.

Comfortable months
Azerbaijan: 6 Armenia: 6

Round 4: What it costs

Azerbaijan

On the World Bank's consumption price level, with Portugal at 100, Azerbaijan sits at 49 (well below Portugal) and Armenia at 63 (below Portugal). Both are cheap by Portuguese standards; Baku's oil-era hotels are the exception, and Yerevan's cafe prices have risen since 2022.

Rule: Lower price level relative to Portugal wins.

Price level, Portugal = 100
Azerbaijan: 49 Armenia: 63

Round 5: What you came for

Armenia

Azerbaijan's board leads with Icherisheher, the walled Old City of Baku and Gobustan rock art; Armenia's with Tatev Monastery and Garni Temple. Baku's walled Icherisheher and the Gobustan petroglyphs are a strong pair; Tatev and Garni are two of the great monastery-and-temple stops anywhere. We give the round to Armenia on density: more of it, closer together, most of it a day trip from Yerevan.

Rule: Editorial. The one round we score by judgement, and we say why.

Verdict

1:3

Armenia by decision

Armenia wins on paperwork, the flight and the sights; the season is a draw and Azerbaijan takes price, with the more surprising capital. If you want a first Caucasus trip with the least friction, it is Armenia, and Georgia next door makes the natural second week. The salvaged article below goes region by region.

Ringside questions

Can you visit Armenia and Azerbaijan on the same trip?

Only by flying out and back in through a third country; the land border is closed. Georgia is the usual bridge. Check the Portuguese foreign ministry's advice on border areas before planning either side.

Does Azerbaijan require a visa for EU citizens?

Yes, an e-visa from the ASAN portal, single entry, up to 30 days, applied for at least three working days before arrival, according to the Portuguese foreign ministry's page.

Which is better for a solo traveller?

Both are low-crime by the foreign ministry's description; Armenia's compactness makes day trips from Yerevan simpler without a car.
